Notes: On rare ocasion for the pre-album versions, Ryan would replace the line "I love these movie stars" with a different star's name. Thus, the line was sometimes "I love that Elton John" or "I love that Madeleine Kahn". The pre-album "Happy Together" version contains a verse of "Happy Together" by The Turtles as the bridge. Guster wrote a real bridge, which includes Brian playing a typewriter, for the album. When playing this song live, the band always improvises a different dissonant intro, dubbed the "Jazz Odyssey", a nod to Spinal Tap. Early on in Joe's tenure with the band, he would only play during this portion, and only on bass, then leave the stage for the remainder of the song. These days he will play bass or keys, then switch to banjo for the rest of the song.
Live Pre-Album "Bop Bah" Version Live Pre-Album "Happy Together" Version Album Version
I love those movie stars
I've got them plastered to my wall
Just like we're dear old friends
Like they already know you
I'm in the picture dome
Feet tilted towards the moon and there's
200 silhouettes
Just relax and they'll show you

Four, three, two, one
I'm at the barrel of a gun
Doomed when this gets out
Play on or stay in
Half dead, half numb
But the barrel keeps me warm
Too late to turn around

Eyes filled with movie scenes
Sucks me right out the mezzanine
It's nice to be this loved
This is good enough

Goddamn this movie star
They keep me coming back for more
It beats doing time out there
Just relax and we'll show you

Four, three, two, one
Went out the barrel of a gun
Doing this gets out
Play on or stay in
Half dead, half numb
But the barrel keeps me warm
Too late to turn around

Bop bah bah...
Bop bah bah...
Bop bah bah...
Bop bah bah...

Bop bah bah...
Bop bah bah...
Bop bah bah...
Bop bah bah...

I want to call him
I live fine
Away from here
I live fine
Far from here
I live fine
This is what we've become

I love those movie stars
I've got them plastered to my wall
Just like we're dear old friends
Like they already know you
I'm in the picture dome
Feet tilted towards the moon and there's
200 silhouettes
Just relax and they'll show you

Four, three, two, one
I'm at the barrel of a gun
Doomed when this gets out
Play on or stay in
Half dead, half numb
But the barrel keeps me warm
Too late to turn around

Eyes filled with movie scenes
Sucks me right out the mezzanine
It's nice to be this loved
This ain't good enough

Goddamn these movie stars
They keep me coming back for more
It beats doing time out there
Just relax and they'll show you

Four, three, two, one
Went out the barrel of a gun
Doing this gets out
Play on or stay in
Half dead, half numb
But the barrel keeps me warm
Too late to turn around

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
The only one for me is you
So happy together

Four, three, two, one
Went out the barrel of a gun
Doing this gets out
Play on or stay in
Half dead, half numb
But the barrel keeps me warm
Too late to turn around

I know a movie star
I've got her plastered to my wall
Just like we're dear old friends
Like she already knows me
She's perfect as she seems
Lifts me right out the mezzanine
I finally fell in love
I'd been waiting forever

Four, three, two, one
When at the barrel of a gun
Keep my head way down
Stay out or stay in
Half dead, half numb
She's enough to make me warm
It's all so safe and sound

Lie back and fast asleep
If you could see what I could see
Drip drop a lovely dream

Goddamn you movie star
Can't you just play a minute more
We'd be the best of friends
You could stay here forever

Four, three, two, one
When at the barrel of a gun
Keep my head way down
Stay out or stay in
Half dead, half numb
She’s enough to make me warm
It's all so safe and sound

She will be sweet on me
Just like a mystery
It's not so hard to see
If I'm not mistaken

She comes from far away
Gets closer everyday
And all that I can say
She's all I want and all that I live for

Four, three, two, one
When at the barrel of a gun
Keep my head way down
Stay out or stay in
Half dead, half numb
She's enough to make me warm
It's all so safe and sound
