Thought I'd catch up a bit on the eve of our flight out to LA for two nights of Gustery goodness. We figured after all those trips out east, we owed Mel a visit), and with the band playing TWO nights at a teensy little club (capacity: 375) - during Mrs. Dave's spring break, no less - what better time to avail ourselves of the opportunity?
The last few weeks have been a bit up-and-down...when last I blogged, I was on my way out to a show at the Paradise - KT Tunstall. It's been a long time since I've gone to a show with essentially no knowledge of an artist other than one song on the radio. Most shows I see are based on personal recommendations from friends, or based on opening sets I've seen. This one I was pretty much flying solo. And right off the bat, I flew poorly - got 20 minutes down to Boston before I realized I'd forgotten my ticket. As a result, I got there a few songs into the opener's set. Which wasn't a total loss, since he was pretty dreadful, but I ended up standing right next to the big pole in the center of the floor. Not the best place to tape from. Also ended up with someone behind and to my right who was about 4'10" and leaning on me - HARD - for 45 minutes (!), thinking eventually I'd give up and let her in front of me. If you're touching me for that long, you'd better be married to me, chickie. Eventually she stopped leaning and started complaining loudly to her friends, which prompted a "Will you SHUT UP?!" from the guy in front of me, which prompted a "Did he just ask me to shut up?!"...it's a good thing eye-rolling doesn't make a sound, or it would have been all over my tape. Fortunately, the recording came out well, even though the show was really nothing to write home about. I think I'm spoiled by 2-hour shows; this ended up being just around 80 minutes, though for $12, not all that bad a deal.
Not much of consequence happened over the next two weeks, but then last weekend my buddy Chris had his bachelor party in good old Atlantic City. While full details will of course never be divulged, I will say that deep-sea fishing is probably best done in warmer weather, blackjack is still much more fun when you've got a tableful of friends to keep the kook flowing, and bacon-and-cheese omelets will cure just about any ailment known to man, especially at 3:30 in the afternoon. Thank you, Garden Cafe...
